Counter lingo

The essays borrow a handful of words from the snack bar. Here is what each one means when we use it.

Regular
Someone who comes in on most days at roughly the same hour. In these pages, anyone who keeps a small routine on purpose.
The stool
A fixed seat that needs no deciding. At home, any chair given one steady morning job.
House paper
The newspaper left on the counter for everyone. Here it stands for the one story you choose to read slowly each day.
The fold
Turning the page so the chosen story faces out, a signal that it is ready to be talked about.
Counter talk
Telling another person, out loud, what you just read or saw. The step that makes a story stick.
The corner
A destination near enough to reach on foot. A café, a mailbox, a bench, a neighbor's gate.
Three landmarks
Things you check on along the same route every day: a fence, a tree, a shop window.
The token
The round card at the end of each essay that sends any question about your own health to your own doctor.
